Cogeneration, producing steam and electric power simultaneously, is planned (for the CAM project), a joint venture of Union Carbide Corp., Amoco Oil Co., and Monsanto Co., and located near Houston, Tex. Normally, utility plants run at about 35% efficiency, but the CAM plant, with cogeneration, is expected to reach 75% fuel efficiency. The National Coal Policy Project estimated that cogeneration projects, such as CAM, could save a total of 680,000 bbl/day of oil by 1985 and up to 2.5 million bbl/day by the year 2000 in the US.
