We have studied the (n,p) reaction at 59.6 MeV using E...delta..E telescopes for particle identification. Accurate data was obtained in the outgoing energy range of 15 to 60 MeV. The angle-integrated cross section (to 70/sup 0/) is found to be in good agreement with the shape predicted by the continuum-model code PRECOB, but exhibits more of a variation in magnitude through the Nickel isotopes than expected. The Kalbach-Mann parameterization of the angular dependence of the continuum was used to generate a continuum background at each angle in order to extract the giant resonance cross section. In /sup 28/Si, the parent analog of the giant Dipole Resonance is an obvious feature of the data and is found to exhaust about 30% of the SJ model sum rule. The 1/sup +/ peak at about 2 MeV excitation is found to be in good agreement with /sup 28/Si(p,n) and /sup 28/Si(p,p') data at 61 MeV. Evidence for 6/sup -/ and 2/sup -/ strength is seen as a prominent peak at about 5 MeV excitation. In the nickel isotopes, the parent analog of the T = T/sub 0/ + 1 portion of the giant Dipole Resonance ix extracted. It's angular distribution is best characterized by the SJ model, and it exhausts about 110% of the SJ model sum rule in each isotope. The cross section in /sup 58/Ni is in rough agreement with /sup 58/Ni(p,p') data at the same energy. Blocking of the Giant Dipole Resonance cross section with increasing neutron number in nickel is studied and compared to three theoretical calculations. The calculations of Brown and Madsen best characterize the blocking effect. The Ni(n,d) reaction is also studied, and the spectroscopic factor for proton pick-up to the f/sub 7/2/ ground state was found to C/sup 2/Sapprox. = 4.8 for all isotopes. This is in agreement with a recent /sup 64/Ni(d,/sup 3/He) measurement and with theory.
