Accelerated aging of parachute materials

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6258768
Sandia Laboratories has design responsibility for weapons system parachutes with intended lifetimes of twenty to twenty-five years. These parachutes are fabricated from narrow woven fabric of nylon and Kevlar. In a review of known data from past investigations of nylon and Kevlar, I. Auerbach concluded that previous real time storage and laboratory tests have been generally inconclusive and do not relate well to our requirements for long stockpile lifetimes. A serious deficiency in most studies was the lack of initial material strength data making it impossible to establish the extent of degradation. This study will establish accelerated aging data which will be extrapolated to real time conditions.
