Generic ballooning in anisotropic pressure toroids

The ballooning mode equation for three-dimensional toroidal configurations with anisotropic plasma pressure is derived from the Kruskal--Oberman energy principle. The Mercier criterion is evaluated for nonaxisymmetric systems with shear (stellarators). This theory can determine spatially localized neutral beam injection effects on ballooning-interchange stability.
