Influence of battery settings and charge preparation techniques on performance of large-capacity coke ovens

Big ovens suffer from lining failure which can lead to pushing problems, quite apart from severe temperature gradients over the vertical section of the cake. Investigations in this sector concentrated on charge preparation and vertical shrinkage. Charges composed of roughly half gas and gas fat coal, and half coking coal were crushed to between 80 and 90% -3mm to show that maximum reduction equates with maximum shrinkage. Raising the high-shrinkage gas coal component at the expense of the coking proportion in the charge increased vertical shrinkage by 20%. The same effect can be produced by extending coking time from 14 to 16h. These two measures should provide less harsh operating conditions and consequently prolong lining life. Charges should be preheated for big ovens as this is kinder to the oven brick work and reduces thermal shock. Any loss of shrinkage normally associated with preheated charges can be balanced by increasing the gas coal content.
