Observation of an oxygen isotope shift in the superconducting transition temperature of La/sub 1. 85/Sr/sub 0. 15/CuO/sub 4/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
An oxygen isotope shift is observed in superconducting La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 0.15/CuO/sub 4/ when /sup 18/O is substituted partially for /sup 16/O; the superconducting transition temperature T/sub c/ is lowered by 0.3 to 1.0 K in different samples. We examine these results using conventioanl phonon-mediated BCS theory and conclude that, for La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 0.15/CuO/sub 4/, phonons play an important role in the pairing mechanism.
