Although increased leaf respiration due to visible fluoride injury has been recognized, little is known of the effects of sub-lethal concentrations on plant metabolism. This study was designed to discover if respiration, measured as oxygen uptake, was affected by concentrations of fluoride too low to produce visible damage. Bean leaf discs were cultured in nutrient solutions over a light source. Fluoride was added as sodium fluoride of hydrogen fluoride and various buffers were used. Concentrations of 1 x 10 T to 5 x 10 T M F stimulated oxygen uptake as much as 25%. This is converse to the inhibition that might be expected as fluoride is known to inhibit the enolase reaction. The stimulation was linear with time up to 48 hrs. The respiratory rate of leaf discs removed from fluoride solutions after 24 hrs and placed on fluoride free media returned to that of the control treatment after several changes of solution. No visible symptoms, such as chlorosis, loss of turgor, or morphological damage, were observed. Higher concentrations of fluoride reduced oxygen uptake long before visible symptoms appeared.
