Effects of atmospheric fluoride on the respiration rate of bush bean and gladiolus leaves

Bush beans and gladioli were exposed to known concentrations of atmospheric fluoride and the respiration rates of their leaves was measured manometrically. The fumigation resulted in an increase in leaf respiration of bush bean plants after a minimum of 8 days at 30 ppb atmospheric fluoride concentrations. Middle age and old leaves showed a greater increase in respiration than did young leaves. Gladiolus leaves fumigated at 2.4 ppb for 25 days showed a high degree of stimulation of respiration of the chlorotic tissue next to the scorched area, and a lower but significant stimulation of respiration of tissue 5 cm from the dead area. Liming the leaves of gladiolus plants did not affect their respiration rate, and did protect them against fluoride damage.
