Novel procedure to upright Alexander Kielland

Journal Article · · Pet. Eng. Int.; (United States)

Controlled ballasting and supplementary buoyancy, applied according to computer-verified procedures, promise to put the capsized Alexander Kielland in an upright position. In addition to the computer simulation, a model of the Alexander Kielland built to a scale of 1:100 was used to tank-test the uprighting procedure. The sequence of events calls for selective dewatering of various compartments in the hull by injection of compressed air, and the addition of ballast water to other compartments by air venting. Simplified 2-dimensional representation are presented.
