When the semisubmersible Alexander Kielland capsized in the Edda field of the Ekofisk Complex in the North Sea March 27, 1980, with a loss of 123 lives, the incident raised serious questions that have been the object of much speculation and second guessing throughout the industry. Why did it happen. What can be done to prevent a similar recurrence. Answers to all the questions involved will be known soon, for crews are hard at work around the clock at uprighting the vessel near Stavanger, Norway. The plan for rotating the Alexander Kielland is described and illustrated, involving alternate injection with water and air to provide buoyancy and ballast.
