High-temperature seal degradation: test report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6252234
This report documents tests designed to establish the ultimate temperature capabilities of several elastomers based on their abilities to prevent excessive cross-seal gas leakage. Three seal materials; N741 nitrile, E-692 EPDM, and S-684 silicone (Parker Seal Co.) functioned satisfactorily after > 500 hours at 400/sup 0/F, 500/sup 0/F, and 550/sup 0/F, respectively. Total test time on the polymers above their recommended use temperature (150, 200, 300/sup 0/F, respectively) exceeded 1000 hours. Accident conditions subjecting the seals to the above conditions did not result in gross leakage across the elastomers under steady state conditions. Thermal cycling of the seals would probably result in unacceptable leakage.
