Samples of L1210 mouse leukemia cells were irradiated at 77K with 3 Mev x-rays. ESR spectra were taken from 77K to 200K. The spectra for the x-irradiated samples were compared to that obtained for samples of /sup 125/I labeled L1210 cells, which were stored at either 77K or 80K for a maximum of 100 days. A sample of BP-8 sarcoma cells was x-irradiated at 4.2K, and ESR spectra were taken from 4.2K to 200K. A corresponding ESR study was conducted at 4.2K and above on /sup 125/I labeled cells, which were stored at 4.2K for thirteen days. Comparisons of the spectra observed for the x-irradiated cells and the /sup 125/I labeled cells revealed that the same major radical species were produced by both forms of irradiation. However, the relative concentrations of these radicals differed in the two cases. The major differences observed upon comparing the ESR spectra for /sup 125/I labeled cells and x-irradiated cells were: 1) A doublet, with a 17 gauss splitting, was observed to be more prominent in the spectra of the /sup 125/I labeled cells. 2) The relative concentration of hydroxyl radicals, in relation to the other radical species, was much less for the /sup 125/I labeled cells. 3) After warming to near 190K, the relative concentration of what is believed to be the thymine hydrogen addition radical was greater for the /sup 125/I labeled cells.
