Responses of animals inhaling nitrogen dioxide for single, short-term exposures

Journal Article · · Am. Ind. Hyg. Assoc. J.; (United States)
Exposure of young rats, dogs, and rabbits to varying concentrations of NO/sub 2/ is discussed. LC/sub 50/ (death within 30 min to 3 days) decreased with increasing time: 415 ppM for 5 min or 115 ppM for 60 min for rats. Exposure of rats to approx. 50% of LC/sub 50/ produced respiratory distress and eye irritation lasting two days but no deaths. Exposure to 25% of LC/sub 50/ produced some distress which disappeared within an hour after exposure. Less effects in dogs with no pathologic changes was observed. Apparent threshold for lung-body weight ratio changes in rats is 104, 65, and 28 ppM NO/sub 2/ for 5-, 15-, and 60-min exposure, respectively.
