Excess mortality as an indicator of health effects of air pollution

Examination of mortality in New York City showed a marked increase in deaths on the day of high air pollution episodes (24-hr mean). Those affected included the 45 to 64 age group as well as the over 65 population. Fog was not a factor. Excess deaths in five air pollution episodes were studied.
