Electric deregulation: You take charge
- VECO Rapley, Inc., Englewood, CO (United States)
Deregulation of the electric-utility market will soon give you unprecedented choice of power supplier, contract and services. Worldwide, retail wheeling is freeing users from their local utilities, often in response to differing regional power costs. Large power users, such as the chemical process industries (CPI), can drastically affect bottom lines by changing power suppliers. Changing suppliers involves risks and rewards that you must understand before starting negotiations. A key risk factor is reliability of service, which may suffer either because of power-production problems at your energy service provider (ESP), or because of transmission outages under the control of your independent system operator (ISO). These terms are explained in the next section. Also crucial is knowing the role of the ESP, which may be a local electric utility, out-of-state generation company or broker who shops the market for the lowest rates on your behalf. If you know how the market is set up, you`ll have a better chance of finding a good deal.
