Are you ready for electric industry deregulation? Sooner or later, your local electric utility will face competition from other energy providers, brokers or full-service energy management firms. Your organization should position itself to benefit from deregulation through careful measurement, monitoring and management (M3) of utility consumption. This three-prong strategy also enables your organization to reduce its current energy costs. Preparing for change now also will facilitate future system integration you may require as your organization`s needs expand and change. This article focuses on electric energy consumption, because that`s where deregulation will offer the greatest savings opportunities, at least in the near future. However, the M3 strategy also can apply to metering of natural gas, water, sewer and other utilities that are vital to your operation.
