An electric storage battery is described comprising: a container having a plurality of walls defining at least one cell compartment; a galvanic cell housed within the compartment, the cell comprising a stack of first polarity plates alternately interleaved with plates of the opposite polarity; an aperture in at least one of the walls; a lug projecting from each of the first poplarity plates through the aperture and aligned with similar lungs projecting from the other first plates of the stack for electrically joining the first polarity plates to a terminal of the battery; a discrete, insulating collar tightly surrounding each of the lug where it pass through the aperture, the collar abutting similar collars on the aligned lugs of the other plates and together therewith space the aligned lugs apart and substantially plug the aperture.
