This patent describes a galvanic cell including a stack of positive and negative polarity, lug-bearing plates alternately interleaved with one another and means for electrically joining aligned plate lugs into sets of like polarity. The improvement comprises: the lugs each having a root portion proximate the plate and a distal portion more remote from the plate and engaging the means; a discrete, insulating collar tightly surrounding the root portion of each lug; and the collars of the aligned lugs abutting one another to space the aligned lugs apart and to insulate the joining means from the plates of opposite polarity.
