The trend toward continuously inspecting and maintaining steam traps coincides with manufacturers' efforts to market replacement and repair equipment. Users report that the energy savings more than offset the labor costs of ongoing inspections. Competing manufacturers concur with users that internal replacement parts are less costly than replacing the total trap. Optimum inspection schedules depend on the relative costs of steam loss and labor. New electronic steam detectors are replacing the cheaper, less effective disk traps. A directory lists 25 major suppliers of steam traps and control valves. (DCK)
