Ozone: isolation of mucoid mutants in Escherichia coli K12

Following treatment of MQ259 (lon/sup +/) with 0.1 ..mu..l/l ozone, mucoid ultraviolet light sensitive mutants were isolated. They produce mucoid colonies at 37/sup 0/C on minimal agar, are abnormally sensitive to radiation, and tend to grow in long aseptate filaments after irradiation with ultraviolet light or fumigation with ozone. Results also indicate that ozone sensitivity as well as radiosensitivity and mucoidy are pleiotropic properties of the lon gene.
