Decline in the radio-emission intensity of the Crab Nebula

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6240166
As a result of prolonged (1961--1981) investigations of the radio-emission distribution over the spectrum of the Crab Nebula it is established that in the frequency range from 0.6 to 10 GHz the radio-emission intensity has decreased by an average of 3.5%. It is likely that the flux did not vary uniformly, but that a rapid decline occurred in the interval between October 1975 and October 1977. The effect can be explained by the escape of relativistic electrons from the envelope of the nebula.
