Northern Permian basin. Old area setting for new technology

The Permian Basin is becoming the carbon dioxide hot spot of the U.S., as more operators begin to inject CO/sub 2/ into their mature fields. A dozen CO/sub 2/ injection projects are underway in the region since the end of 1980, and 3 major natural CO/sub 2/ reservoirs are either in production or under development to supply enhanced oil recovery (EOR) requirements. In the past 19 yr, 23 CO/sub 2/ flood projects have been implemented in the Permian Basin, making it one of the pioneer oil regions in the application of this relatively new EOR technique. Of the 12 most recent floods, 9 are full-scale in scope and 3 are pilots that will evaluate the technical viability of CO/sub 2/ flooding. Besides the success of waterfloods in the area, several other factors contribute to the favorability of the Permian Basin for CO/sub 2/ tertiary projects, such as large reservoirs, high geographical concentration, favorable reservoir characteristics, proximity to natural CO/sub 2/ sources, and successful field pilots.
