US industry eyes buildup in oil output via CO/sub 2/ floods

Commercial scale carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects are moving toward fruition in the U.S. After more than a decade of pilot projects and reservoir evaluations, companies have begun to make billion dollar commitments they hope will lead to reserve additions of several billion barrels of crude oil that secondary recovery will not reach. Delaying start-up of some projects are 4 unknowns--the long term price of crude, price of CO/sub 2/, supply/demand for CO/sub 2/, and logistics for repeated use of CO/sub 2/. However, if pilots prove economically and technically successful in fields where projects are under way or presently planned, at least 75 commercial projects will be in operation by the late 1980s. Immediate supply of CO/sub 2/ from natural sources in Colorado and New Mexico could double the number of Permian Basin reservoirs under miscible flooding during 1983 to 1985.
