Voluntary industrial energy conservation program. Fact sheet

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6237703· OSTI ID:6237703
The industrial sector of the Nation's economy consumes an estimated 43% of total U.S. energy requirements. In order to encourage industry to undertake energy conservation actions and to lead the Nation in adopting an energy conservation ethic, the Federal Energy Administration has developed and is implementing a voluntary industrial energy conservation program. There are five basic objectives of the industry/government energy conservation program which are: identify the conservation potential within each of the major energy consuming industry groups; identify and work to remove constraints on industry's ability to reduce energy demands; work with firms to evaluate energy usage, determine jointly with them the feasible industry-wide short and long run energy conservation goals and encourage higher priorities for energy saving investments; obtain data through monitoring program to inform the public of progress in industrial conservation; and identify and develop government and industry policy initiatives that will spur energy conservation efforts. Preliminary progress toward 1980 energy efficiency goals have been received from trade associations representing the first six industries. The specific goals and improvements in energy efficiency are reported for the aluminium, iron and steel, paper, chemicals, petroleum refineries, cement, baking, copper, meat packing, and glass industries.
