Search for parity nonconservation in the reaction /sup 19/F(p,. cap alpha. /sub 0/) /sup 16/O

The reaction /sup 19/F(p,..cap alpha../sub 0/) /sup 16/O was used to study a parity and isospin forbidden ..cap alpha.. transition. The 1/sup +/, 1 state in /sup 20/Ne (E/sub x/ = 13.482 MeV, GAMMA = 6 keV) was populated by capture of transversally polarized protons. Placing the quantization axis in the reaction plane the ''irregular'' analyzing power A/sup PNC/ was determined. No relevant deviation from zero was observed within a statistical accuracy of ..delta..A/sup PNC/ = 1.1 x 10/sup -3/. An upper limit for the irregular width of the 1/sup +/ level GAMMA/sub ..cap alpha..//sup PNC/<6 x 10/sup -6/ eV was determined.
