Electrode substrate with integral edge seal and method of forming the same
This patent describes an electrode plate assembly for use in a fuel cell power plant, the assembly comprising: (a) a porous carbonaceous electrode substrate plate having at least one marginal edge terminating in at least one side-wall, and having a catalyst layer deposited on one surface of the substrate plate, the catalyst layer having at least one marginal edge terminating in at least one sidewall, the sidewall of the catalyst layer being inwardly offset along the one surface of the substrate plate from the side wall of the substrate plate, and the catalyst layer having an exposed surface substantially parallel to the one surface of the substrate plate whereby the sidewall of the catalyst layer extends from the one surface of the substrate plate to the exposed surface of the catalyst layer; and (b) gas sealing band along each edge of the electrode plate assembly, which band is formed in a single injecting step, and which band includes a first part filling pores in the substrate which first part projects into intimate sealing contact with the surface of the catalyst layer abutting the substrate plate, the band also including a second part formed integral and in one piece with the first part. the second part being disposed in intimate sealing contact with the catalyst layer sidewall.
