An anode assembly is described for a lithium-halogen cell including halogen-containing cathode material. The anode assembly consists of an anode electrical conductor sandwiched between a pair of lithium plates defining substantially oppositely directed lithiumsurfaces terminating in a peripheral edge, at least a major portion of the length of the peripheral edge being uncovered and exposed, at least one of the oppositely-directed lithium surfaces being shaped to include formations which increase the surface area thereof, the formations terminating a short distance inwardly of the peripheral edge thereby defining a marginal bonded border region between the peripheral edge and the formations.
