DOE oil shale program focuses on year 2000 feasibility

The US Department of Energy oil shale program has stated that its goal is to foster development by the private sector of an economically competitive and environmentally acceptable oil shale industry whose products can compete with petroleum in the marketplace by the year 2000. Primary research areas in the program and major activities within each area are as follows: (1) fundamental process research: characterization of reference shales, characterization of process phenomena and products, optimization of processes, and characterization of effluents; (2) applied process research: solid waste management, and siting methodology; (3) data base: major plants, test data, resource, math models. Research programs undertaken by the following organizations are summarized: Morgantown Energy Technology Center, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory; Los Alamos National Laboratory; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Sandia National Laboratory; Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory; Mineral Resources Institute; Western Research Institute; Cliffs Engineering Inc.; Energy and Environmental Engineering, Inc.; Eastern Shale Research Corporation; Hycrude Corporation; Terra Tek, Inc.; University of Wyoming; and Wyoming Water Research Center.
