HYCRUDE Corporation was formed as a wholly-owned subsidiary of GDC, Inc., the commercialization and licensing unit of IGT, to concentrate solely on oil shale development and commercialization. The program will be concentrated on the vast Devonian shale deposits of the eastern United States. A survey conducted by IGT indicates that more than 400 billion barrels of oil could be recovered from known resources of Devonian shales by surface mining followed by above ground Hytort processing. The surface mineable shale, alone, exceeds estimated total remaining recoverable energy in US resources of crude oil, natural gas and uranium. Attractive aspects of eastern shale are that it lies near major markets, water for processing is more plentiful in the east, and greater flexibility in land reclamation procedures will be allowed by the eastern climate.
