Pion-nucleus scattering lengths in light nuclei, and the pion-nucleon sigma term

The pion-nucleon sigma term is estimated on the basis of data on slow pion scattering by nuclei with A< or =24 with inclusion of the renormalization of the PCAC relation in a nuclear medium. The dependence of pion-nucleus scattering lengths on A is investigated. The problem of the magnitude of the dispersive part of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential is discussed.
