2,4,6-Tri-tert-butylnitrosobenzene (BNB), which is know as a good spin-trapping agent, was found to be a scavenger for electrons and holes in glassy alkanes. By spin trapping experiments on 3-methylpentane (3-MP) containing BNB the species produced by ..gamma.. irradiation of 3-MP were identified. Based on this identification, mechanisms for the ..gamma.. radiolysis of 3-MP and for the photolysis of 3-MP containing the photosensitizer N,-N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine are discussed.
