Lubication and surface finish of extruded aluminum

Tests were conducted at the Savannah River Laboratory to evaluate lubricants for possible replacement of a lead powder and oil mixture. The lead mixture is currently used to lubricate billets and tooling in the extrusion of Type 8001 aluminum. Three alternative lubricants were tested. Each of these contained graphite and oil, and two had additional additives. Billets were extruded at 440/sup 0/C through a conical die. The lubricating ability of each lubricant was judged by surface finish of the extruded billet and by extrusion pressure. None of the lubricants tested is a suitable replacement.
