The nuclear physics research program at the University of Virginia can be placed in four broad areas: studies on few-body nuclei at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), medium energy particle physics, electro-nuclear physics, and absorption of anti-protons in heavy nuclei. The research being conducted at LAMPF includes total and differential cross sections for ..pi..d ..-->.. pp below 20 MeV; pion scattering from helium isotopes; isospin dependence of pion absorption in /sup 3/He, quasi-free pion single charge exchange on /sup 3/He; performance testing of a BG0-NaI eta spectrometer; search for narrow resonances in the B = 2 missing mass spectrum from the /sup 3/He(p,d)mm reaction; a study of quasi-free pion scattering in Li and C. Medium energy particle physics research includes a search for heavy neutrinos, precision measurement of the mass difference between the pion minus and pion neutral, and a search for the electroweak decay of the muon plus. Electro-nuclear research projects involve y-scaling in electron scattering from nuclei; electro-excitation of the delta particle in nuclei; transverse and longitudinal response functions for several nuclei near Q/sup 2/ = 1 (GeV/c)/sup 2/; two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron; the Q spared dependence of the /sup 4/He(e,e'p) coincidence cross section at the quasielastic peak; and plans to sue the PEP for nuclear physics.
