Alaska: next big play the Beaufort Sea
The exploration effort in the Beaufort Sea offshore Alaska is nearer reality following decisions by federal and state courts which pave the way for exploration work on leases obtained in December 1979. In other Alaskan action, the federal government is ready to offer additional offshore leases even while the state of Alaska seeks to block offshore exploration on federal lands in favor of a measured and careful exploration of onshore lands. At Prudhoe Bay, work continues on 2 major projects designed to recover more oil from proved reserves, including a massive waterflood for the Prudhoe Bay Field's Sadlerochit Sand, which is the field's prime pay, and a drilling and development program for the Kuparuk Formation west of the Prudhoe Bay field. Oil presently is being produced sufficiently (1.64 million pbd) to keep Alaska in a solid second position in the ranks of US oil-producing states.
