Alaska's drilling activity brightens
The new Alaskan exploratory campaign in the Beaufort Sea area promises to be costly, long, and difficult because of the hostile offshore environment. The prospects for discovery in the area are surmised as strong on the basis of lease bidding. However, Alaska's drilling activity prospects are strong in at least 4 other drilling and production areas: the massive, $1.5 billion waterflood project proposed for Prudhoe Bay; development of the Kuparuk Pool, involving some $350 million; additional exploration within the Naval Petroleum Reserve; and new drilling in the Cook Inlet Basin. Production of oil in Alaska is second in the US, approximately 1.6 million bpd. Development of gas fields (presently producing 466 MMCFD) and LNG facilities in Alaska also are discussed.
