Eddy County continues as undisputed leader in the Morrow gas play. New Mexico Oil and Gas Conservation Commission records indicate that 92 Morrow-Atoka drilling permits have been filed since the first of the year, making this a very good year for Morrow prospecting; even slightly better than last year which was an excellent year. Since the first of the year the rig count in Eddy County has remained consistently high. The activity has resulted in a number of significant discoveries. While many operators work the Morrow, probably the most active is Yates Petroleum Co. of Artesia. Most of the completions in the Morrow-Atoka range from one to 5 MMCFD, but a number have been completed at significantly higher rates.
