Alterations in the lung following the administration of ozone

Journal Article · · Arch. Intern. Med.; (United States)
Rabbits were exposed to 5 ppM O/sub 3/ for 3 hr. An increase in heterophils (from 2 to 3% to 34 to 50%) and ciliated epithelium cells (from 2 to 3% to 8 to 16%) in lung lavage was noted. Control lavage contained almost pure alveolar macrophages. RBC were also present in O/sub 3/-exposed animal lavages. Essentially all macrophages and ciliated epithelial cells in O/sub 3/ group were damaged or dead. No significant changes were found in surface tension properties including lecithin composition. There were no significant morphological differences apart from increase in cell debris in alveoli.
