Aluminum-chromium catalysts with additions of alkali and rare-earth element (REE) oxides catalyze both the heterocyclization of H/sub 2/S with C/sub 6/ hydrocarbons and the dehydrocyclization of alkanes into aromatic hydrocarbons. The two reactions carried out on chromium-containing catalysts proceed via the same steps of dehydrogenation of alkanes to alkenes and alkadienes. Catalysts for dehydrogenation and heterocyclic ring formation have similar physicochemical properties, and Cr/sup 2 +/ ions are present in the dehydrogenating active sites. The authors compare the catalytic effect of aluminum-chromium catalysts both with and without K/sub 2/O and REE oxide additives on the synthesis of 2-methylthiophene (MT) from n-pentane and H/sub 2/S.
