A number of bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium aluminohydrides with the formula (C/sub 5/H/sub 4/R)/sub 2/TiAlH/sub 4/, where R = H (I), CH/sub 3/ (II), Bu-t (III), and (CH/sub 2/)/sub n/(C/sub 5/H/sub 4/)/sub 2/TiAlH/sub 4/, in which n = 1 (IV), 2 (V), and 3 (VI), have been studied. The ESR spectra of ethereal solutions of complexes I-III and VI consist of octets with g = 1.991 (I), 1.987 (II), 1.989 (III), and 1.990 (VI). The spectrum of complex V is a broadened octet with g = 1.989. The constants a/sub H/ and a/sub Al/ in complexes I-III, V, and VI are close to 5 G. The spectrum of complex IV is a singlet with g = 1.991 and ..delta..H = 37.5 G. Complexes I-III, V, and VI are unstable. They slowly decompose in solutions (in Et/sub 2/O, THF, Et/sub 2/O + NEt/sub 3/) and rapidly decompose in attempts to isolate them in an individual state. The AlH/sub 4/ group in complex IV is bidentate. The complexes (Cp/sub 2/*TiAlH/sub 4/)/sub 2/ TMEDA (TMEDA is tetramethylethylenediamine) have been synthesized and isolated in the crystalline state for I, II, V, and VI. A structure has been proposed for these compounds on the basis of data from IR and ESR spectroscopy.
