Construction of the Kilngas Commercial Module (KCM), located on the site of the Illinois Power Company Wood River Generating Station at East Alton, Illinois, was completed in 1983. Operational testing was begun in mid-83, and initial demonstration of the technology, using Illinois No. 6 coal, was completed in 1984. Currently, a multi-phased Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM) program is being conducted at the KCM. The overall RAM program objective is to operate the Kilngas Commercial Module, as necessary to obtain sufficient data and experience to verify performance expectations and to provide a basis for commercial offering. After describing the gasifier and process, the objectives and findings of the first phase of the RAM program are discussed. 1 figure, 1 table.
