Precipitation-redissolution-reprecipitation phenomenon in sodium dodecylsulfonate system has been investigated. At various levels of CaCl2 in a wide range of NaC1 concentration. Precipitation and residual sulfonate concentrations were estimated by chemical analysis while critical micelle concentrations of various solutions were determined by specific conductivity, Kraft point solubility, surface tension and dye solubilization techniques. While precipitation is found to be caused by the formation of calcium disulfonate, redissolution was observed to occur only when micelles are formed. Correlation of the effect of ionic strength on the redissolution to that of it on micellization supports the proposed mechanism of micellar redissolution. The thermodynamic model with capabilities to predict the nature and concentrations of various species in different solutions, given the thermodynamic constants and the initial levels of surfactants and inorganic ions has been developed. 20 refs.
