The air quality effects of a rail terminus on an adjacent office building

South Station, one of the two train stations in Boston, Massachusetts, is the terminus for the Northeast Corridor project, a proposed revitalization of the Boston-New York-Washington passenger rail link. Currently, plans for South Station include redirection of the tracks into an enclosed platform area and construction of a multilevel parking garage and busport. These plans allow for future development of hotel space over the platform roof. The environmental impacts associated with the South Station project have been discussed in an Environmental Impact Statement, which was prepared for the U.S. Department of Transportation. This paper describes an analytical and field program conducted at the office building to determine the present air quality concentrations and to predict future concentrations that would result from stack emissions from the proposed redevelopment.
