Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6220042
The report presents a discussion on methods available for the control of oil spills. After consideration of preventive methods, various methods of containment of oil spills at sea and in estuaries are described. The use of pneumatic barriers and mechanical barriers to confine the oil slick is explained. There follows a discussion on the state-of-the-art in the removal of oil from the surface of a body of water. Removal may be achieved by skimmers, by use of the vortex principle, or by adsorption processes. Chemical treatments explained relate to the use of dispersants, floating absorbents, sinking agents, gelling agents, and burning agents.
