Safety issues in the siting of LNG terminals

Conference · · Gastech '79 LNG/LPG Conf. Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6215157
Reduction of the probability that an LNG tanker will ground or collide with other vessels near the terminal is the most important siting issue, according to a Cremer and Warner study of LNG safety issues which also indicated that LNG export terminals generally contain more hazardous plant items than do import terminals; LNG-tanker incidents occur at much the same rate as other shipping incidents; and many of the stringent planning restraints are now outdated due to modern design innovations, as exemplifed by the minor significance currently being given to modern LNG storage tanks, due to their excellent safety, in the problem of terminal siting.
