Superconducting and mechanical properties of cold hydrostatically extruded monofilamentary Nb/sub 3/Sn wires

The first objective of this study was to assess the merits of cold hydrostatic extrusion as an alternative metal-forming process and compare it with the conventional wire drawing of Nb/sub 3/Sn compounds. The second was to evaluate the critical current density of the hydrostatically extruded wire as a function of strain and magnetic field. The cold technique was used to prepare Nb/sub 3/Sn monofilamentary wires having bronze-to-niobium ratios of 2.25, 4.0, 9.0, and 17.75. If a 40% reduction in area was not obtainable, a wire was given an intermediate anneal for 20 minutes at 450 degrees C. Another series of wires was prepared by drawing. These wires had the same material content, dimension, bronze-to-niobium ratio, and diffusion treatment as did their extruded counterparts; if a 15-20% reduction in area was not possible, a wire was given the same intermediate anneal. It was found that cold hydrostatic extrusion allowed for a shorter manufacture than the wire drawing technique. Strain and magnetic field effects were similar in the two wires.
