Superconducting and mechanical properties of cold hydrostatically extruded monofilamentary Nb/sub 3/Sn wires

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5681119
A series of Nb/sub 3/Sn monofilamentary wires were prepared both by cold hydrostatic extrusion and wire drawing. The bronze-to-niobium ratios of these conductors varied from 2 to 18. A comparison between the two fabrication processes showed that hydrostatic extrusion shortened the manufacturing procedure. Further, strain tolerance of J/sub c/ at 4.2/sup 0/K and 8T for the hydrostatically extruded wires compared favorably with the drawn material. Studies of the bronze-niobium interface, the Nb/sub 3/Sn growth rate and the microhardness of the constituents were also carried out.
