National stripper well survey

Book ·
OSTI ID:6208917
The annual census of stripper wells (those that produce fewer than 10 barrels of oil per day) provides an index of the lower end of the economic scale for the petroleum industry. When economics force the abandonment of low-producing wells, i.e., when the revenues no longer leave a small profit after royalties, severance taxes, and operating expenses, the remaining oil will never be recovered. The overall number of wells and the volume of production during 1983 set records, but the level of abandonments was the highest in seven years. Declining prices, declining activities, and the relentless increases in costs will show up in future years. 3 figures, 3 tables.
