Anomalous magnetic field dependence of ultrasmall, low critical current Josephson junctions

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
We examine the response of an ultrasmall, low--critical-current Josephson junction to an external magnetic field. We find that the dc supercurrent exhibits an anomalous field dependence which reflects large-amplitude phase fluctuations. These fluctuations, which arise from zero-point charge oscillations, cannot be described within the context of conventional linear theories.
