10-T, 60 cm bore Nb/sub 3/Sn test module/coil design

Conference · · Adv. Cryog. Eng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6202546
The coil concept is described; conductor configuration and verification test results are given. Particularly presented are those results concerning mechanical aspects of Nb/sub 3/Sn conductors. The verification tests indicate the 10 T, 60 cm bore, Nb/sub 3/Sn TMC will operate reliably. The procedure that allows increased bending of the conductor up to about 1% strain is heat treatment in a prebent shape. Also, the equal-area heat flux is higher than the maximum nucleate boiling limit. The maximum stress on the TMC conductor is calculated to be 132 MPa, which is less than 2/3 of the yield strength measured for a full-sized conductor at 4.2 K. This TMC is the first large coil using Nb/sub 3/Sn in a high current conductor.
