Conductance fluctuations in disordered metals

Journal Article · · Appl. Phys. Commun.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6202522
The conductance of a metallic sample at sufficiently low temperatures exhibit fluctuations as a function of magnetic field, chemical potential or impurity configuration with an RMS magnitude given by e/sup 2//h (similarly ordered 4 x 10/sup -5/ (ohm)/sup -1/). The conductance is also surprisingly sensitive to the motion of a single defect so that in thin films, the change in conductance is independent of sample size. Implication for 1/f noise in highly disordered metals will be discussed.
